Positive Vibes #9: Two Weeks

Hello Internet Friends.

I am on countdown.

It is only two weeks until I finish placement and I am over the moon to be on the home stretch.

I’ve spent a lot of this placement reflecting on how far I have come in the past few years – both personally and professionally.

Four years ago I used to hate using the telephone, avoided talking to people in shops and absolutely hated myself.

Now, while I am still not  perfect, I have so much more confidence in everything that I do.

I think this down to a couple of things.

1. I have found my passion – being a nurse/midwife is one of the hardest, most difficult but most rewarding career I could have chosen but it fills me with a sense of purpose that I am glad I have found.

2. Age – I think getting through my teenage years and now being a young adult has really helped me gain the confidence and poise that I have always wanted. Also, being older I seem to care less what other people think of me and are happier just being me.

The morale of this installment of positive vibes is to hang in there. Things might be tough at the moment but if you work hard and keep a positive mindset, things should work out.

Positive Vibes # 7: Luck

Tomorrow is the day that I find out my fate.

For four years I have been working hard, learning, doing the best I can and all of this hard work and dedication has been building to tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the day that I find out whether I get a job.

Everyone in my class is great, everyone deserves a job yet 30% of us will miss out. 70% will be lucky.

We have been given a great opportunity and we have prepared as well as we can.

What’s in my Bag?

My university workload is absolutely crazy at the moment, so I thought I would do a quick and easy post.

I am not someone who uses the same bag all of the time. I generally mix and match bags to match my outfits. However, recently I have been using my black, faux leather backpack from Kmart. I think I only paid about $20 for it and I absolutely love it. It fits a surprising amount of stuff in it and, being a backpack, it is really comfortable to wear.

My iPhone

I’m pretty sure my heart would stop if I am not within a couple of metres of this baby. Isn’t that so sad? But unfortunately its true. I rely on my phone for everything, just like almost everybody these days. Its my phone, the internet, my alarm, my calorie counter and workout tracker and its my source of music.

My Wallet

This is just a cheap wallet I bought in Strandbags a few months ago. It contains the standard wallet-y things – ID, debit card, WCC, medicare card etc

My Keys

These keys have one for my car, one for my home in Ballarat and the other for my home in Geelong. I also have a Lego torch keyring that my dad bought for me at a Lego expo as well as an NMFC keychain.

Lip Balm

I’ve had really dry lips in the past week. I’m not sure why but it means that I haven’t left the house without my trusty paw paw ointment.

Hand Sanitiser

My favourite hand sanitiser (and yes I have a favourite) is the Soap and Glory Hand Maid. I love the classic Soap and Glory scent and the consistency is perfect, it doesn’t leave your hands at all sticky. Love, love, love.

Diary

This is my very cute diary from Typo. I really loved the design of this diary. Not only is the front cover adorable, the pages are set out in weeks so I can see what’s coming up for the week. There is also room for writing to do lists, and cute stickers in the back.

Pen

There is pen in everyone of my handbags. You never know when you are going to need to write something down. The pen that is in this bag is a dalek/doctor who pen. Yes, I am that cool.

Headphones (not pictured)

I always carry with me a spare pair of headphones, usually my old ones. I just keep them in the zipped pocket of my bag in case I forget to grab my good ones as I walk out the door, which happens to me on more days than it doesn’t.

Sunglasses & Glasses case

These are pretty self explanatory.

Ibuprofen

You never know when you are going to get a headache or God forbid period pain. Thus, I always carry some ibuprofen in my bag for emergencies.

Snacks

When I get hungry I get grumpy. To save everybody from myself I carry with me some form of snack. At the moment I’ve been carrying with me a Freedom Foods Cruchola Muesli Bar. They are gluten free and nut free and still taste good.

Polaroid Camera

I very rarely use it, but I always carry it with me. It has been in every bag that I have used since I got it at Christmas last year.

Canberra

I’ve just returned from my trip to Canberra.

I had the most amazing time in Canberra. It is somewhere that I’d always wanted to go. Luckily a reason came up. My AFL team, North Melbourne, were scheduled to play a game in Canberra. Side Note: We won.

We absolutely packed everything that we could into our four day trip. By we, I mean me, my mum and my best friend Dylan (pictured). We did all of the tourist things – Questacon, The Museum of Australian Democracy, The National Museum of Australia, The Australian War Memorial, and Parliament House.

Canberra really turned on the weather over the last few days. Known for its freezing temperatures, Canberra produced four sunny days, with an average temperature of 15. Perfect August weather.

It is a really quiet capital. There were hardly any cars on the road or people on the streets. We went to the centre of Canberra for some shopping on Friday and we only saw a couple of hundred people. If we had of been in the centre of Melbourne on a Friday afternoon there would have been hundreds of thousands.

I loved every minute of our trip. There are already plans in the works for another. I really recommend everyone head to out nation’s capital.

Free Fitness

For years the one of the reasons I would use for not exercising more was ‘it’s too expensive to join a gym’. Really I was just making excuses, but I am sure there are many people out there who struggle with ideas to exercise on the cheap.

In the past few months I have discovered that there is a whole community of fitness bloggers and vloggers and people motivating each other on the internet. I probably could have found it earlier, but I just never had that motivation.

Today I am going to share with you some of my favourite people on YouTube, Apps and various blogs that have really motivated  me to get into shape and best of all its all free!

Blogilates

Cassey Ho is a certified fitness instructor and creator of POP pilates. Her approach to fitness is all about keeping it fun and interesting. She is crazy insane with her pilates and cardio workout, but is always really bubbly and enthusiastic about it all. I have a love/hate relationship with her. I hate how mental the workouts are but I love the results. Only a couple of days ago she challenged her ‘popsters’ to do 1000 squats, and for some reason I was encouraged to do it, and I did, all 1000. There is no way that I would have been able to do that a couple of weeks ago. Cassey also preaches the clean eating mantra. Her blog and Youtube channels contain plenty of healthy, clean recipes as well as her fitness videos. Each month Cassey creates a free workout calender, it is like having a free personal trainer. She’s amazing, and I owe her a lot. My favourite workout by Blogilates is the Victoria Secret Model Ab Workout. You should definitely check it out.

Joanna Soh is a certified personal trainer and has developed her website and YouTube channel to help people in three areas: food, fitness and faith. I have only just discovered Joanna recently, but I have been really enjoying her workouts and meal ideas. I really love Joanna’s 30 min Cardio Kickboxing routine. It really makes you sweat!

PumpUp

PumpUp is an app which allows you to join in with a community of people all trying to get fit together. If you are a jealous person this probably isn’t for you as there are some really beautiful/fit people, but I find it really motivating. If those people can look like that, why can’t I? The app also has a function to design a workout for you. You can pick the length, type and difficulty of the workout and it designs it for you. You can also track your workouts and progress and see how you are improving.

Niomi Smart is new to the blogging world. Her blog is a lifestyle blog that includes the occasional food post. She creates some amazing clean recipes that I just love, always. Niomi is also unbelievably fit. She provides me with a lot of motivation.

Over the past few months I have learned some really simple tips from all of these people, and I would like to share them with you.

♥ Drink Water ♥

Water consumption is really important. It can increase energy levels, improve mood, improve skin complexion and keep you full. Sometimes hunger is actually thirst in disguise. If you feel hungry, have a glass of water and then wait a few minutes to see if that feeling goes away. Then eat.

♥Eat Clean♥

Health/Fitness/Weight Loss is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. It is important to eat good, health, clean foods that keep you full and help your body to perform at its optimum level. But always remember that nobody is perfect. You will sometimes crave a chocolate bar, or a piece of cake or a huge bowl of pasta with plenty of cheese. Its okay to give into these cravings occasionally. The Blogilates program allows for a ‘YOLO Meal’ once a week.

♥Move Daily♥

You don’t have to go out and run everyday or do an hour long pilates workout. Just move daily. Even if you run to the kitchen and back a couple of times a day, or take the stairs at work. Increasing your heart rate daily will help to control weight, boost mood and allow for a restful sleep at night.

♥Get Plenty of Sleep♥

Your body is not able to do all of the amazing things it needs to do to function without any sleep. You need to rest and recover from the days activities in preparation for tomorrow’s. The amount of sleep you need depends on your age, but anywhere between 8-10 hours is generally enough to provide rest for your body.

Obviously I am not a fitness guru or professional in anyway. I am just a person on their journey to fit that has learned some things along the way. Hopefully these amazing people can help you in some way. I would also recommend you read my blog post where I discuss the lessons I learned from reading Cameron Diaz’s The Body Book.

How to Feel Better

This post has been inspired by a recent Youtube video by Anna Akana (Go and watch it if you haven’t already https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwSd9LsOiCQ).

We all get into a funk sometimes. Life can be going all fine and dandy until something comes along and knocks the wind out of our sails. It doesn’t necessarily have to be something serious. It could be something as little as your favourite team lost on the weekend, or your winged eyeliner was wonky, or your sister ate the last of the strawberries that you were saving for breakfast. All of these happened to me this weekend and have for some reason put me in a terrible mood. But I’m determined to get out of it and just like in Anna’s video, I’m going to give you some tips of what gets me out of a funk.

1. Unplug. This one may be really hard for people of the internet generation but can really help get out of that mood that we have got ourselves in. It only has to be for an hour. No stalking your ex on Facebook, no getting jealous of someones perfect life on Instagram and no getting caught up in the feminist movement on Tumblr. Just unplug, unwind, and focus on yourself for an hour.

2. Get Dressed. I know it’s easy to just stay in your PJs all day. As I type now, at 1.30pm, I’m still in my jim-jams. But having a shower and getting dressed can make you feel like a whole new person. Feeling fresh can give you a fresh outlook on life.

3. Go for a walk/run (dependent on fitness levels). Yes there may be no wifi outside. Yes there are people outside. But fresh air and the pounding of pavement can just help clear the mind and get rid of the frustrations that have built up.

4. Put on your secret favourite song and sing along at the top of your lungs. Everybody has a song that they secretly love and due to societal expectations you are too ashamed to admit it. Whether it is Ice Ice Baby -Vanilla Ice, or Bye, Bye, Bye – NSync, or my personal favourite MMMBop – Hanson, just turn up the volume and indulge in your guilty pleasure song.

5. Resist the urge to grab a block of chocolate. As soon as I get a little grumpy, my default is to eat my feelings, usually in the form of a block of Cadbury’s Black Forest chocolate. But I know as soon as I do I will probably feel worse, sluggish and with a headache. Instead, grab a piece of fruit. Bananas are a great option as they boost serotonin levels making us feel happier.

6. Have a cup of tea. For some reason, sitting down with a hot cup of tea instantly improves my mood. Tea can reduce that ‘fuzzy feeling’ through the combination of amino acids and caffeine. Whether that be green, black or camomile curl up with a freshly brewed cup of tea for a mood boost.

I know none of these are earth-shattering revelations, but sometimes it is the most simple things that can make a difference.

I’m off to take my own advice.
